The undersigned petitioners respectfully Sheweth that at the Octo- Term of the Cumberland Circuit Court 1864. W^m. E. Paull and J. T. Cheatham was Indicted for keeping aTipling house in the Town of Burskville, and at the April term of sd court 1865 the cause came on to be heard and the Defts Paull & Cheatham pled guilty, whereupon the atty for the Commonwealth agreed that Jugment should go aginst sd Deft for Sixty Dollars, Sd Paull & Cheatham was keeping Tavern in the Town of Burksville and had kept a Small Stock of good Brandys &c for the purpose of Supplying the wants of the traveller who might Stop at sd Hotel, The Trustees of the the Town of Burksville was the only persons authorized ^by law^ to grant licens in sd Town and there being no Trustee at the time thy commenced Tavern keeping nor at any other time while they kept sd tipling House, and Tavern that Mr W^m. E. Paull has a large family to support and but Small means to support them, and that the Said Paull & Cheatham are law abiding men. and Gentlemen, The premises considered. the undersigned Respectfully ask your Excelency to pardon Sd Paull & Cheatham and remit the sd fine of sixty Dollars against them, and they will vouch for their good behavior in the future.

There was a Judgment rendered at the same term of the court vs our ould friend John A. Bowman for sixty Dollars ^for Tipling^ that I think ought to be remitted as I have no Idea he intended to violate the law, my opinion is that he ~~[...]~~ only had a small quantity of Brandy on hand for his own use and some of his friends in passing by called on him for some and he was to kind hearted to refuse them and brandy was so high he did not think he could afford to give it to them.
