To His Excellincy Tho. E. Bramlett. Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Your Petitioner William Bryant would most respectfully represent that in the year 1846 (he being a mere youth). was employed & engaged by one James Benham to keep a Grocery store for said Benham in Meade County that he kept the same under said engagement not knowing that it was unlawful or that said Benham had not obtained a license so to do. indeed he did not know that a license was necessarie -- and at the Novr Term of the Meade Circuit Court 1846. having been indicted therefor (he & Benham). a Judgment was rendered agst them. for the sum of sixty dollars & costs. and the then Govenor of the Commonwealth remitted the same fully as to Benham -- upon his Petition and some time in the year 1852 he thinks it was he paid the costs thereof fully to the then Sheriff or deputy sheriff. This Petitioner says he is a verry poor man and to be compelled now to pay it would ruin him -- an execution or capias profine is in the hands of the sheriff of Meade County for the first time for ten or twelve years. he prays your Excellency will remit it fully &c. and he as in duty will ever &c

We the undersigned citizens of Meade County state Mr W^m Bryant is a good quiet orderly citizen & we recommend your Excellincy to remit this fine, he is a poor man, having a family to provide for, & it would do him & his family a very serious injury, if Compelled to pay the fine, or go to prison for its non payment, Brandenburg Ky, 7^th Febry 1865.
