To His Excellency Thos. E Bramlette
Governor of Kentucky

Your Petitioner John Sheets states that at the Oct. Term 1864 of the Franklin Circuit Court. He was fined the sum of ~~Fifty~~ Sixty Dollars for the offense charged, of keeping a "Tippling House" He states that at the time of the trial he was sick at home and unable to attend court in person & had not employed Counsel to represent him, & that judgtment was rendered against him by default He also states that at the time he was charged in the indictment with selling liquor by the drink. He had in his employ as clerk, his son. John. S. Streets. & that if liquor was so sold, it was done so by his son contrary to the express orders of Your petitioner, & that he was ready & could have proven this upon the trial but for the interference of sickness, He further states that he was at the time of the alledged commission of said offense a merchant in this county & had Merchants License to sell liquor by the quart, That he made application to the Franklin County Court, for Tavern License -- & was refused -- after which he expressly time & again instructed his clerk not to sell any liquor except by the quart, This is the first offense of your petitioner, And he asks that so much of said Fines be remitted as is not due the officers of the court, costs &c -- turn over
