Dear old friends -- On the foregoing leaf -- please find at petition of Jas. P. Whitlow for remission or respite of fine, Whitlow is an humble poor man -- and the coercion of the fine at the present at least -- would take bread & meat out of his children's mouths, He has always been called a loyal man -- and I am satisfied the Country has sustained no loss by the act charged against him

By presenting the petition to the ~~petition to the~~ Gov -- you will much oblige an old schoolmate who holds the names of both of you in grateful remembrance

Gov -- State of. Ky --

Whereas. Jas. P. Whitlow, was convicted, some 3 or 4 years since, in the Warren Circuit Court, of an assault and battery Since which time ^Ex^ Gov -- Magoffin respited the fine, (which was $50⁰⁰) for the period of 12 months, which time has expired, and the Sheriff is now Seeking the collection of said fine from said Whitlow, who is a very poor man, with a wife and three children, entirely dependant on him for a support, by daily labor -- at $1.50 per day -- and whereas there are mitigating circumstances, attending the circumstance, out of which said fine grew -- ~~the~~ In, consideration of the premises, Said Whitlow earnestly asks your Excellency to exercise your pardoning power -- in a remission of said fine -- but at any rate, a further respite upon same --
