To his Excellency Tho^s E Bramlette

The petition of P. R. Pumphrey Respectfully represents that at the April term 1864. of the Louisville City Court he was indicted for Keeping a Gambling house and his fine assessed at Two hundred dollars. He further States that he is the proprietor of a coffee house in Said city, and does not and never did keep a gambling house. That at the time the offence was committed for which he was convicted he was absent from the city and his business was entrusted to a bar keeper and that the playing complained of took place whilst he was so absent and without his knowledge and against his consent He states that he was innocent of any intent to violate the laws and that he cannot pay Said fine without material injury to his buisiness and great distress to himself and family. He respectfully prays that executive clemency may be extended to him and the above fine remitted and he will ever pray &c

and do most cheerfully join in the within Petition and request that the fine imposed may be remitted

Mr Pumphrey is a clever Gentlemen & entitled to full credit. I have remitted my costs in this case. There was no evidence to show that ~~he allowed~~ playing in his house more than once, and then he was absent. He ~~was~~ ^did^ not defend the case. I Join in his petn.
