Your Petitioner W. N. Mayfield wouldld respectfully state, that he was fined two hundred dollars in the City Court of Louisville at the February Term of said court for permitting gambling in his house.

Your petitioner makes no denial that on several occasions he did permit playing, but the games were for small amounts, & among friends, & fore amusement, ~~& not for gain.~~ more than gain, & usualy the same parties. The playing was not permitted because of its profits, but simply as above stated. The two hundred dollars fine is the lowest fixed by statute. Your petitioner prays your Excellency to remit the amount as none of the prayers were gamblers, but good citizens & business men, & only met to while away a little time, when business hours had passed

Louisville Feby. 4^th 1864

I am personally acquainted with W. N. Mayfield the Petitioner & have known him as a most Estimable Gentleman & business man who has been engaged in the Grocery business in this city for Several years. When the Grand Jury returned the Indictment against him I was Induced to make Enquiries in relation to the matter & Learned the following facts. That Information was given by an Enemy of Mayfields. That it was true as admitted by him that it had been frequently the case that some of his neighbors & Friends would call in the Evening after Tea to spend an hour in social conversation & would pass the time generally in the backroom of the store, playing at Cards & when anything was bet on the Game the amount was very small & nothing of any amount was ever lost or won, when the case was called M^rMayfield admitted these facts & that a small sum had occasionally been won & Lost on these admissions a verdict was rendered, for $200. I am personally acquainted with the Gentlemen who have United in the Petition, and there are no more respectable Gentlemen in the city & they have Joined in the Petition knowing the facts above stated
