The Affiants Thomas W. Pickering & Bryant Nichols say that they have heard the forgoing Petition of Newman Estis read and read the same and they state that the statements in said Petition are true and they Further say that they were arrested at the same time that said Johnson was and were present at Johnson's Island when said Johnson was sent south by order of the military authority of the united states against the will and protestations of said Johnson And Affiants further state that said Johnson desired to return home and do everything required of him by the Military or civil Law of the Land affiants were released and sent home and said Johnson has never returned
