People

People are at the core of the Civil War. They lived, fought, and died in an era of civil strife. Civil War Governors of Kentucky (CWGK) offers biographies of ordinary Kentuckians that animate their lives and experiences during the war within the Commonwealth.

About the Biographies

These biographies, like the others created for CWGK, are launching points for discovery. They provide basic background information about an individual’s life: When and where they lived? Who was their family? What did they do during the Civil War era? CWGK cannot answer every question for every Kentuckian. Archival records are limited and prevent a complete picture of each person. However, CWGK’s biographies allow users to access glimpses of the people who appear in documents and can lead to further discovery.

All People

Below you can find an alphabetized list of every single person annotated in the CWGK archive. Unfortunately, CWGK cannot identify every person mentioned in the edition because of incomplete records. CWGK staff will provide as much information as they can about an individual, and, due to the digital nature of the project, as we learn more, staff will update the biographies.

In addition to the names listed here, you can go to our document search and search for the names of people we have yet to annotate.
