Funders
Civil War Governors of Kentucky (CWGK) is possible because of the work and support of many individuals and institutions as collaborating partners.
A project of the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS), which is a part of Kentucky State Government, CWGK has received funding for staff and digital infrastructure from Kentucky general funds. Additionally, the generous donations of those interested in the development of Kentucky History through the Kentucky Historical Society Foundation (KHSF) helped ensure early development and success of the project.
Beyond CWGK’s institutional home, the project has benefited from the support of Federal funders. The National Endowment for the Humanities supported early editorial work and educational development from 2011 to 2020 through its Scholarly Editions and Translations program.
The National Historical Publicans and Records Commission has also supported the editorial work and digital infrastructure of CWGK through its Publishing Historical Records in Collaborative Digital Editions (formerly Publishing Historical Records in Documentary Editions) program.
Additionally, intellectual work for CWGK has been supported by other organizations. The Andrew S. Mellon Foundation supported work on meta-data and the labor of digital projects through the Nineteenth Century Digital Cooperative. Multiple CWGK staff over the years attended the Association of Documentary Editors Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents. In 2025, the Society of Civil War Historians supported KHS with a mini-conference grant to supplement KHS’s Civil War History Day program to bring graduate students from across the country to Kentucky for hands-on workshops about digital history and public history work.
